Public Speaking & Communication Skills 101

Learn how to sharpen your public speaking and communication skills in this one hour program on Wednesday, April 28th at 7pm. You’ll be shown tips and techniques to become more comfortable with speaking in front of a crowd and also how to communicate effectively with others in smaller settings. Presented by Lisa O'Toole, Assistant Professor of Communications at Lewis University in Romeoville.

Teen Advisory Board April Meeting

Teens in grades 9-12 are invited to attend the library's Teen Advisory Board meetings! At our April meeting (on Thursday, April 8th at 7pm), we'll be making a chick craft with Twinkies in celebration of the library's Chick It Out program! Members will receive volunteer hours for attending TAB meetings. New members are welcome!

Teen Book Club: Ruined

Join us on Tuesday, April 6th at 7pm for a lively discussion of Ruined by Paula Morris! A mysterious ghost story set in New Orleans, it's sure to get you creeped out and wondering what's going to happen next! Books are available at the library for check out in the month prior to the meeting. For teens in 6th grade and up.

ACT Testing Strategies

Worried about taking the ACT? Come to the ACT Testing Strategies program on Monday, April 5th at 7pm! You'll learn how to score higher on admissions tests using key Kaplan strategies. The format and content of the tests are explored, including ways to take advantage of the test format to maximize efficiency on the exam. Various question types will be reviewed and students will be given a study plan for success. Sponsored by Kaplan. Registration encouraged but not required.

Teen Book Club: Same Difference

The next meeting of the Teen Book Club is just days away! We'll be meeting on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7pm to discuss Same Difference by Siobhan Vivian. And this will be an extra awesome book club meeting, as Ms. Vivian has offered to answer (through Skype) the book club's questions about the book! We are pretty excited about this opportunity, so we hope to see you there! (Oh, and did we mention that there will be snacks? There'll be snacks!). Books are available at the library for check out in the month prior to the meeting. See you on Tuesday!

Energy Application Deadline Approaching!

You still have time to register for this year's session of Energy: A Teen Leadership Academy! We are excited to have additional programs for Energy teens to attend and we'll be announcing them soon. To apply for Energy, interested teens can pick one up at the library or print one out from home by clicking here. This award-winning academy aims to help create youth leaders who will assume leadership roles throughout the community. Teens will commit to attending three library programs (on topics such as college preparation and communication skills) and fulfill a service requirement at the library. Participation in this academy will look impressive on college applications and resumes, and it's also fun! Energy teens will also get priority regarding summer volunteer hours. Energy is open to teens in grades 9-12. Applicants do not have to be residents of Homer Township. The deadline for applications is February 16, 2009 (we are closed on February 15th, but you can drop your application in the bookdrop if you need to!). We'll be contacting teens in the days after the deadline with more information on the event.

Teen Book Club: Stormbreaker

Join us as we talk about Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz at our next meeting of the Teen Book Club on Tuesday, February 2nd at 7pm. It's already one of our group member's favorite books, and now we want to to know what you thought of it! And of course, we'll be snacking on some food items and talking about any other awesome (or not so awesome) books we've been reading over the past month. Copies of each month's selection are available for check out at the library. New members are welcome! For teens in 6th grade and up.
