The Bookmobile travels the 36-square mile district, bringing materials to neighborhoods, and visiting senior villages, area schools, and day cares facilities.
The Bookmobile provides materials and library service to area residents including preschoolers, school age children, teens, adults, and senior citizens in Homer Township who would otherwise have limited access to these valuable community resources.
Designed to meet the needs of all age groups and interests, this “traveling library” carries a wide variety of popular fiction and nonfiction books. Bookmobile staff provides reference services, reserve titles, and facilitates book requests. The Bookmobile visits every 2-3 weeks for public stops and several times a year for school stops, as arranged.
Our Wheels / Our History
Planning for additional Outreach Services was a high priority for the library, which sought a grant for implementing Bookmobile service. The Homer Library received a $150,000 Bookmobile grant award, and the process of building a new state of the art bus began in 2005. On the road in May 2006, our bus features a core collection of materials for children, teens, and adults in the community, including books, magazines, and audio materials. Planning is underway to secure a new bookmobile after 2024.
Our steel bookmobile was manufactured by Thomas Built Buses and customized by Matthews Specialty Vehicles. It is 36’ 8” long, 8’ wide and 12’ 6’ high. Fully loaded, it weighs approximately 14 tons and will house over 5,000 items. It includes a wheelchair lift, (3) air conditioners, a heater, a diesel engine, and a generator.
