Why is it important to learn about financial institutions? Banks, credit unions, money transmitters, check cashers, and other providers of financial products and services can play an important role in establishing financial well-being if they are understood and used correctly.

In her presentation, Vanessa Arita Reyes will highlight why it is important to research and have conversations about financial systems in the communities where we live. Vanessa will share her top reasons for learning about financial institutions, including:

  •     Orient yourself in the financial system through the tools and resources available
  •     Understand how credit works, credit reports, and the credit system
  •     Protect personal information to avoid falling victim to scams

During this presentation, the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) will focus on the importance of talking about money and finances. The conversations can be used as a tool to address the challenge that understanding the financial industry can be difficult, even when using our native language, which can increase the disadvantages non-English speakers experience in the US. Attend this seminar to learn how to have and lead conversations about financial institutions and personal finance, while analyzing sources of information to make the best decisions for your particular situation.

Presented by Vanessa Arita Reyes, Coordinator, Financial Education Programs
