Attention adventurous women! Have you ever considered backpacking solo? There are more women on the trail than ever before. Going solo as a woman can present some challenges. Learn tips and tricks on how to prepare physically and mentally and ease the fears of family and friends when planning extended time in the wilderness alone.
Whatever the reason you may have for wanting to go solo, most women find the freedom on the trail empowering. There's something about carrying everything on your back, solo, that transcends your normal boundaries and gives you a sense of accomplishment that carries over to life off the trail.
Cathy Rehr has backpacked solo at Rocky Mountain National Park, segments of The Colorado Trail and has plans to hike the John Muir Trail this summer. She has 4 children and is a grandmother of 3. She enjoys the sense of accomplishment and the comfort of solitude that hiking solo brings.
